Reconciling evolutionary robotics and robotics

This list has been created to pursue the discussions on the links
between Evolutionary Robotics and Robotics initiated during the IROS
EvoDeRob workshop (October, 11th 2009, St. Louis, see
http://www.isir.upmc.fr/evoderob).

Evolutionary Robotics (ER) deals with the use of Evolutionary Algorithms (EA)
within a robotics context. Relative to EA, ER deals with specific phenotypes
(robot controller and/or structure) and has more complex evaluations, results of
the observation of the interactions of the robot and its environment.

Among the subject of interest for the mailing list, we have identified
the following (non exhaustive list):
* What can EA/ER bring to robotics ? What can EA/ER bring to intelligent systems ?
* What can robotics bring to EA/ER ?
* For what robotics problems is EA/ER the most suited or interesting ?
* How to get the best from an ER experiment ? Once some solution has been
evolved, may it be perfectly solving the problem or not, what to do to get the
best of it and make it the most interesting for the scientific community ?
* What are the future challenges for ER: from an ER perspective ? From a
robotics perspective?
* How to better pursue and develop the exchanges and discussions between
robotics and ER communities ?
* What would be relevant benchmarks for comparing ER approaches ?
